From the moment you first notice a bald spot or thinning, you start to panic and try to find a solution to grow your hair back fast quickly.
Many of us have been there, and it’s hard to dive through the hundreds of products available in all honesty but from my experience and talking with others a lot of folks start with shampoo and conditioners.
Maybe it was a recommendation from their barber or hairstylist but because there are thousands of hair loss shampoos, vitamins, surgeries, medications- so where do you even start?
Well, you could start with my Nioxin Shampoo Reviews.
Seriously, I’ve got your back so before you get too stressed out, know I have done a lot of the research on this subject, so I am happy to help you on your quest for healthy hair. I always like to start with a quality hair loss shampoo, because you need to treat your hair loss on the outside too. Depending on why you are losing your hair, there are several options available, and Nioxin has six different systems to help address your hair loss needs. I found this unique structure, so I wanted to share an honest review of the six systems they offer.
What’s Inside a Bottle of Nioxin Shampoo?
Before we dive into the products, let’s take a quick look at the most common ingredients Nioxin adds to their shampoos;
- Nettle leaf is anti-inflammatory and improves your scalp health (R1). Nettle leaf also helps block DHT, a hormone that causes your hair follicles to shrink and fall out.
- Biotin helps restore your hair’s strength and encourages scalp health (R2).
- Peppermint oil helps stimulate your scalp and reduce dryness (R3).
- Fennel helps nourish your scalp, which encourages hair growth (R4).
- Camellia sinensis leaf extract
Quick Product Breakdown of Nioxin Hair Thinning Shampoos
Name: Nioxin Cleanser Shampoo System 1 for natural hair with light thinning
Cost: $41.00
Servings: 10.1 oz
Attributes:
- Removes environmental build-up
- Adds volume and shine
- Designed to provide light moisture
- Designed for natural, non-color treated hair
Key ingredients: Nettle leaf, biotin, peppermint oil, grapefruit, hops
Pros: Includes DHT blockers and removes residue from environmental factors. It provides very light moisture, so if you have natural, semi-healthy hair, this is a great option.
Cons: This formula is not sulfate-free and does not provide any UV protection. This formula was also designed for natural hair, so it is not color-safe. The price is also relatively steep, and there are more parts of the system to buy if you want the best results.
Name: Nioxin Cleanser Shampoo System 2 for Natural Hair with Progressed Thinning
Cost: $22.00
Servings: 33.8 oz
Attributes:
- Removes environmental residue
- UV protection
- Offers light moisture
Key ingredients: Lemon peel, peppermint oil, grapefruit, biotin, nettle, maple
Pros: This option is more affordable than the system 1 shampoo and comes in a bigger size. I love that they included biotin and nettle in the formula.
Cons: I was disappointed to see all those added sulfates, and you still have to buy a conditioner for best results.
Name: Nioxin Cleanser Shampoo System 3 for Colored Hair with Light Thinning
Cost: $19.99
Servings: 38.8 oz
Attributes:
- Balanced moisture
- Color safe
- Cleans your scalp from environmental residues
- Designed for color-treated hair
Key ingredients: Fennel, peppermint oil, maple, camellia sinensis
Pros: The addition of camellia sinensis is excellent for hair growth, and I love that this works well for color-treated hair. I also like how this formula is more gentle for those who just have a little hair thinning, but might not need the more decadent formulas. The price is also nice!
Cons: It’s safe to say that all of these formulas include sulfates, so that’s always a downside in my book.
Name: Nioxin Cleanser Shampoo System 4 for Colored Treated Hair with Progressed Thinning
Cost: $28.70
Servings: 33.8 oz
Attributes:
- Color safe
- UV protection
- Moderate moisture
- Removes residue
Key ingredients: Peppermint, biotin, folic acid, camellia sinensis leaf extract.
Pros: I love the formula and that it was designed to address color-related hair thinning. As a serial hair dye enthusiast, this formula target my leading cause of hair thinning, as coloring your hair is very damaging. I also like that it provides moderate moisture, but doesn’t weigh your hair down.
Cons: The price is a little more than some of their other options. However, the ingredients are great for hair growth.
Name: Nioxin Cleanser Shampoo System 5 for Bleached and Chemically Treated Hair with Light Thinning
Cost: $42.00
Servings: 33.8 oz
Attributes:
- Color safe
- UV protection
- Moderate moisture
- Removes residue
Key ingredients: Fennel, hydrolyzed silk, peppermint oil, camellia sinensis leaf extract
Pros: The formula helps block DHT and provides a decent amount of moisture for your hair.
Cons: For some reason, the price is a lot higher than the previous formulas.
Name: Nioxin Cleanser Shampoo System 6 for Bleached and Chemically Treated Hair with Progressed Thinning
Cost: $20.00
Servings: 10.1 oz
Attributes:
- Color safe
- Intense moisture
- UV protection
- Removes scalp residue
Key ingredients: Fennel, aleurites moluccana seed oil, biotin, folic acid, peppermint oil, camellia sinensis leaf extract
Pros: One of the best formulas compared to the other ones listed, and I love that this formula addresses hair bleaching (because that stuff is so bad for your hair). This reminds me of olaplex, but a way more affordable option.
Cons: I wish they would stop with the sulfates, and also, this price is low, but it offers a way smaller option than the other products.
Are the Shampoos by Nioxin Worth the Cost?
Well, I don’t frankly know how to answer this question.
I cannot for the life of me figure out their pricing system. Nioxin does not sell their products on their home site, so you have to hunt these shampoos down at Ulta and Amazon. There was an extensive range of sizes and prices, without any consistency in pricing.
When I first tried it I got them from my salon.
I did see several BOGO offers, so that’s worth looking into. I will say that the formulas are great (minus the sulfates), so if you can find these products in the $20.00 range, they are definitely worth the cost there. Some of the sizes were a lot larger, making it a sweeter deal if you can find them.
Your best bet is to head over to Nioxin’s main website, where they list all of the locations to purchase their products.
Are Nioxin Hair Loss Shampoos Natural?
Unfortunately, they are not.
Nioxin products use sulfates, so they cannot be considered a natural product.
They do use some plant-based ingredients, but the sulfates take away from that.
Some Final Thoughts on Nioxin Shampoos
Overall, these are quality products with years of reviews and testimonies.
I do think these products will improve your current hair while also helping grow your hair as well. They do include ingredients that have been proven to work, and these products are even used in salons. I wasn’t fond of the weird pricing model, but it’s a great option if you can get past that. Just keep in mind you will need to purchase a conditioner as well- but they do offer a small discount to buy the whole system.
It makes sense to use their full system, including conditioner and leave-in products, but you will have a much higher price tag.

I don’t recommend nioxin. My hair loss gets worst using this product. I end up with more thinning hair than before using Nioxin. Please be careful.
Hey Ruth, thanks for sharing your experience with Nioxin Shampoo. We haven’t really seen this to be the case, however, it’s good to know. Of course there could be a few other things that come into consideration. Nonetheless we appreciate you for letting others know. Personally, I’ve found I prefer the shampoo by Pura D’or.
